How is January already over!? The month definitely flew by! I’m going to try and get into the habit of doing a monthly review post to keep track of my wellness goals and also any random favourite things from the month. Here we go…
Exercise: After completing a few rounds of P90X and P90X2 last year, it was time for a change. My plan this month was to focus a bit more on cardio and flexibility while still maintaining my strength (especially upper body). The rough schedule I set up for myself was four Insanity Max 30 workouts a week, two yoga classes and a rest day. I also tried to fit in some pull-ups and chin-ups a couple times a week.
So how did it go? I knew this was a pretty ambitious schedule and I definitely did not stick to it exactly as planned. As is usually the case, a few things came up – a couple sick days and a couple days I just didn’t fit it in. Overall it went pretty well with at least 5 workouts a week. It felt great to get back to my favourite yoga studio!
Meditation: The plan was to do a shorter morning practice of 5 to 10 minutes, and a longer evening session of 20 minutes. I did really well with the morning sessions – only missing one day! The evening sessions went pretty well too, only missing a couple days and not always doing the full 20 minutes. Overall, this was a success!
Nutrition: I had originally contemplated doing another keto experiment in January, but after some pretty unhealthy eating over the holidays, I decided to just get back to regular low carb meals and focus on mindful eating. The goal was to eat slowly and avoid overeating! Thanks to my husband’s love of cooking, I did well with getting back to our usual diet (no sugar, no refined grains, tons of veggies, healthy fats) and aside from a few occasions, the mindful eating went well too. As I posted last week, I’ve signed up to take part in a time restricted eating research study, so will be diving into that experiment in the next week!
Bullet Journalling: I started my first proper bullet journal this month and I completely love it! If you’re not familiar with this – it is basically a do-it-yourself day planner/journal. There are so many beautiful artistic ideas online, but I started pretty simple with just a yearly calendar, a month layout for January and a habit tracker. I’ll be posting more details soon!
Wilderness First Aid: I had the opportunity to take a one week advanced wilderness first aid course for work and it was probably the best training course I have ever taken. Having never completed any first aid training I had no idea what to expect. Our group spent the week outside in some pretty chilly and wet conditions learning how to deal with all sorts of medical emergencies in situations where you are hours or days away from medical help. It was mainly scenario based, where several volunteers would be set up along the trail as the patients, complete with fake blood, wounds and a back story. The rest of the group was tasked with figuring out the injuries, prioritizing care and providing treatment. It was a challenging week and I learned a ton!
